ReplyDeleteI would say that computer science is a skill that seldom stands alone: There are very few opportunities for developers, designers, programmers and managers to create whatever they may imagine. Students need to learn the business of the company where they plan to work: For hospitals, something of healthcare management; for banks, financials, etc. These are the problems that demand automated solution to "add value" and "create capital."
Mathematics hasn't the application most people assume: The study of mathematics contains a great variety of methods for solving _all_ problems (though the layperson may not see it). This discipline and a methodological approach to problem solving is essential in computer science. Mathematics very often helps us determine the options and choices among the innumerable compromises in the use of resources that we face in computer science.

Great! a computer science degree is a good place to start. An education in computer subjects is essential to landing a variety of computer careers, including those as a software or video game designer, and many major companies won't hire an individual who doesn't have a computer-related degree.
